Join us November 10–12 for this year's FILM|NEU film festival presenting new German language films from Austria, Germany and Switzerland!

AUSTRIAN FILM NIGHT

The ACF DC proudly presents the acclaimed Austrian film FIRST SNOW OF SUMMER on November 10, 2023 at the Embassy of Austria. The film is in German with English subtitles.

The event is preceded by an Austrian wine reception.

ABOUT THE AUSTRIAN FILM

Nine-year-old Alexander grows up in a small house with a small garden with his loving grandmother. On his tenth birthday, he promises her never to fall in love: He does not want to follow in his father’s footsteps and share his fate. Every Sunday, Alexander visits his father in the tunnel systems of the Vienna underground. As a young adult, he starts to care for his father and decides to be nearby. Alexander’s new workplace is a small lost-and-found office for the Vienna underground. Here he meets the beautiful and vivacious Caro. Alexander had already successfully resisted love two times before, now his promise will lead him into a bittersweet world and a fight between life and death – in which he will change the seasons from summer to winter.

Director Chris Raiber, 2023, 96 min.

GERMAN FILM NIGHT

The German film selection SCHLAMASSEL will be presented on Saturday, November 11 at 6:00 PM at the Goethe Institute Washington.

ABOUT THE GERMAN FILM

1996. 7 ½ years after the "Wende" (German reunification). The year in which Johanna's grandma passes away.

Johanna's soul is in turmoil. No matter what she does, it's wrong. Suddenly, it's wrong to give the heir hunter of an uncle a piece of her mind at Grandma's funeral. Johanna doesn't give herself time, not to grieve and not to find peace. Crushed by ambivalent feelings, she runs herself ragged in her personal life and as an overworked intern, often hiding behind her camera.

When the original photo of a concentration camp guard falls into her hands, she seizes the opportunity and sets her sights on the now eighty-year-old Anneliese Deckert. On the way to the Deckert, Johanna has no idea that she is about to encounter the whole family and that returning the photo will set off a whirlwind of events.

Director Sylke Enders, 2023, 115 min.

SWISS FILM NIGHT

The Swiss film selection SEMRET will be presented on Sunday, November 12 at 2:00 PM at the Embassy of Switzerland.

ABOUT THE SWISS FILM

When Joe insists on finding out more about her roots, Semret initially refuses to face her past. But after a false accusation at the hospital, she realizes she must stand up for her rights or risk losing everything she loves.
