SOME IMPRESSIONS
The 11th edition of Kids Euro Festival, a two-week long festival of European arts and culture, was held from October 20 to November 4, 2018. Every year, it is presenting numerous free cultural activities to children and their families from the DC metro area. With programs both for the general public as well as for school groups more than 10,000 DC-area children and their families enjoy Kids Euro Festival programs each year. This is made possible by the 28 European Union member states and the European Union Delegation in Washington in cooperation with the European-American Cultural Foundation. THEATER | Wolf
In association with the Austrian children theater company Next Liberty we were delighted to present the play WOLF, an adaptation of the centuries-old fairytale Little Red Riding Hood, originally written by the Brothers Grimm.
“Little Red Riding Hood is to blame … for everything; even though she had been warned … however, let’s start from the beginning. Once upon a time there was a forest with many trees, countless flowers and even more paths to lose one’s way. There was the girl Little Red Riding Hood, her mother, her grandmother and the wolf. But not many people know that in the forest there also lived an ambitious crow, a know-it-all storyteller, a nearly blind mole and really nice musicians. And all of them were important for the course of the story and how, in the end, Little Red Riding Hood found to her grandma’s house.”

Duration: 50 min
The piece, written and directed by Christoph Steiner, grants a special role to music. The fairytale was originally written by the Brothers Grimm and is known in various versions throughout the world. Christoph Steiner was exposed listening to fairytales through cassettes as a child and gruesome details in it seemed normal to him, although he admits that he finds them rather disturbing today. He chose Little Red Riding Hood as a starting point for his own journey in the mystical world of fairytales rather intuitively while trying out various characters. In a collaborative process he and his friends also worked out the music for the piece.
