The State of Transatlantic Relations and the European Union -
Past, Present and Future
With all its imperfections yet unprecedented economic success, the European Union stands out as the most successful peace project in the world, ever since allowing the United States and Europe to unite in their quest for freedom, peace, and prosperity. However, in the context of current challenges to the established world order, multilateralism, the transatlantic relationship and the European Union appear to be under assault both in the U.S. and in Europe.
Panelists drew on their first-hand experience to examine and assess the present state of transatlantic relations and the European Union, and discussed future prospects against the background of the upcoming U.S. midterms, the European Parliament elections in May 2019 and a new European Commission, as well as specific challenges like migration, trade disputes, the final phase of the Brexit negotiations, and the rise of populist and anti-establishment political movements on both sides of the Atlantic.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
At the age of only 13, Christa Karas-Waldheim started to learn the skills of a goldsmith in New York. After graduating from law school and working as a lawyer, she became a self-employed artist and received numerous awards for her artistic craftsmanship. In developing her personal style she draws from the great Viennese tradition of Art Nouveau and the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstätte) style, transforming them into classically-modern design objects.
Heide Warlamis is a sculptor, designer and manager. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University for Applied Arts Vienna. In 1981 she began with the development, production and distribution of her porcelain-design program, internationally renowned under the name “Vienna Collection”, which builds on the tradition of the Vienna Workshop (Wiener Werkstätte) of the 1920s. Her porcelain objects are being produced in small numbers, making each one virtually unique. For her work Heide received numerous prizes such as the Austrian State Prize in design.
