The ACF Washington was honored to celebrate this year’s International Human Rights Day and the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) together with Gerfried Stocker, Artistic Director of Ars Electronica, one of Austria’s leading cultural, educational and scientific institutes for new media art. As artificial intelligence and digital technology in general have already changed many areas of our daily life, Gerfried gave an insight on current developments and their potential to revolutionize societies in the future. However, as with any new technological advancement, there is always a risk of not only generating positive but also a negative outcome. Therefore, the increasing digitalization of our lives in the 21st century and its possible impact on our intrinsic human rights will also be addressed in the discussion. Gerfried was joined by Peter Fatelnig, Minister Counsellor for Digital Economy Policies of the EU Delegation to the US, who provided a legal insight on these controversial discussed topics.

GERFRIED STOCKER | Speaker
Artistic Director of Ars Electronica
Gerfried Stocker is a media artist and electronic engineer from Austria. Since 1995 he has been managing and artistic director of Ars Electronica. He developed the groundbreaking exhibition strategies of Ars Electronica Center and was responsible for the set-up and establishment of its own Ars Electronica Futurelab, as a R&D facility. Since 2004 he has been in charge of developing Ars Electronica’s program of international exhibition tours. From 2005 onwards he planned the expansion of Ars Electronica Center and implemented the total substantive makeover of its exhibits. Stocker is a guest speaker at many international conferences and a Visiting Professor at Osaka University of Arts as well as guest lecturer at Deusto University Bilbao. He is also a consultant for many international companies on creativity and innovation management.

Minister Counsellor for Digital Economy Policies of the EU Delegation to the US
Peter Fatelnig is Minister-Counsellor for Digital Economy Policies at the Delegation of the European Union to the United States, residing in Washington, DC. Peter’s long experience in the digital tech sector, notably in building industrial innovation strategies, helped the EU to drive forward internet innovation policies. As a senior manager at the European Commission since 1998 he is committed to a positive European vision of the future internet society and economy. Before coming to Washington, DC he managed the team leading Europe's new Internet policy and investment initiative (flagship on “Next Generation Internet”). Prior to the EU he worked on international assignments for the strategy consulting firm American Management Systems, and for the European Space Agency, in the Netherlands. Peter also is a senior member of the IEEE.
Nicol Turner-Lee | Moderator
Fellow at the Center for Technology Innovation at the Brookings Institution
Nicol Turner-Lee is a Fellow at the Center for Technology Innovation at the Brookings Institution, a part of the Brookings’ Governance Studies program. Prior to this role, Nicol was a Vice President and Chief Research and Policy Officer for the Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council (MMTC), a national non-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting and preserving equal opportunity and civil rights in the mass media, telecommunications, and broadband industries. Before joining MMTC, she was Vice President and the first Director of the Media and Technology Institute for the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, one of the nation’s leading research and public policy institutions whose work focuses on issues of concern to African Americans and other people of color. At the Center for Technology Innovation, Nicol researches public policy designed to enable equitable access to technology across the U.S. and to harness its power to create change in communities across the world.
