The ACF Washington was delighted to present, in collaboration with the Croatian Embassy, the concert by the renowned Austrian pianist Markus Schirmer and Croatian guitarist Miroslav Lončar. The two musicians perform regularly together and have filled the halls with the music from Franz Schubert, Franz Kreisler, Fernando Sor and Joaquin Rodrigo. They took us on a musical journey from the late 18th to the 20th century.

ABOUT
MARKUS SCHIRMER | Piano
Markus Schirmer, born in 1963, is an Austrian pianist. For his exceptional artistic diversity Markus Schirmer has been awarded the “Music Manual Award“ at the Euromusic International Music Convention, and is a recipient of one of Austria’s most prestigious awards, the Karl Böhm Interpretation Prize. He received the German Record Critics’ Award for his debut CD of Schubert Sonatas. His critical-acclaimed recordings include works by Haydn, Beethoven, Ravel, Mussorgsky and “The Mozart Sessions” (recorded together with the US chamber orchestra “A Far Cry”) and have won several international prizes. In addition to his work as a Professor of Piano at the University of Music in his hometown Graz – many of his students are acclaimed award winners – Markus regularly gives international masterclasses for piano and is a sought-after adjudicator at several prestigious piano competitions. Furthermore, Markus is the artistic director of the annual international music festival ARSONORE, which takes place at Eggenberg Castle (UNESCO World Cultural Heritage) in Graz every year in September.
MIROSLAV LONČAR | Guitar
Miroslav Lončar, a native of Croatia, is an educator, performing artist, and composer for guitar music. Lončar started his music education in Croatia and went on to study in Austria, where he received his master’s degree, and later to the US, where he earned his doctorate. In addition to his teaching activities, Miroslav has been performing on classical guitar throughout Europe and the US, mostly in the Lončar Guitar Duo with his wife, and recently with the Lončar Trio that includes their daughter Maya. Miroslav has appeared as solo artist with the Dubrovnik Festival Orchestra, the Graz Philharmonics, the Mississippi Symphony, the Meridian Symphony, the Gulf Coast Symphony, the Symphony of West Florida, the Loudoun Symphony and other orchestras. He has recorded several albums, as a soloist, with the Klasinc&Lončar Duo, Trio Bolero, the calypso group Kaiso, and others. Miroslav has been writing educational and concert compositions for all levels, from beginners to advanced guitar players. Around twenty books of his original compositions have been published.
